Who went to school in Elizabethan England?
-very small percentage of children-mainly boys
What encouraged more people to become literate?
Protestant bible being in English
How did nobility learn and what did they learn?
- they learnt at home
- lesrnt foreign languages, history philosophy ect
What were daughters in nobily taught?
-variety of skills expected of upper class women e.g: dancing, hirse riding ect
Describe the development of grammar schools?
- 42 founded in 1560s
- 30 founded in 1570s
They were schools set up for boys considered to be bright a d who came from well-off families
- girls were not allowed to attend grammar schools
- fees based on property owned by family, lower class boys who showed promise did not ahve to attend fees
Describe the discipline and punishments of grammar schools?
Teacher maintainted discipline in thr classroom
Outside the classroom: 2 boys were made monitors and had to report on misbehavings
What were petty schools?
Set up and run in a teachers home: learn reading and writing in English, punichment was very harsh
What were dame schools?
Schools that provided basic education for girls, run by local educated women
What was the difference from pre elizabeth to post Elizabeth in education levels
Pre:20% men, 10% women
Post 30% men,10% women

Mystery plays-brought bible stories to life
Why were secular(non-religious) plays in great demand?
-more exciting as the endings were not already known, theatre companies formed, e.g the Queen’s men
