Who were Puritans, what was their aim and where did they come from?
-radical Protestants
They wanted to “purify” the Christian religion by getting rid of everything that wasn’t win the Bible
-They came to England from Protestant accepting countries like the Netherlands

-she wanted to estabish a form of Protestanism that Catholics could accept

Established moderate Protestant reforms with concessions for Catholics
appearances of churches,
laid out how services were to be held,
new prayer book
Priests had to wear vestments(to appease Catholics)
- finned for not attending church(Church became cumpulsory)
- but the wording of the communion service was kept deliverately vauge so Catholics and Protestants would accept it
What was the act of Supremacy?
An act that made Elizabeth govenor of the Church of England(all clergy and royal officals had to swear her an oath of alligence)
What were the royal injunctions?
Letter by Cecil to the clergy on a range of issues to reinforce the Acts of Supremacy and Uniformity
How were the Puritans a threat to the Relogious settlement?
- they began to disobey parts of the religious settlement
- they forced Elizabeth to back on her demand of saying every Church needs a crucifix, they also were against priests wearing Vestments as they believed they were like ordinary people
How was the Catholic Papacy a threat to Elizabeth’s religious settlement?
-Pope told Catholics they should not attend Catholic services in 1556( Elizabeth didn’t want to create any sort of Catholic marytrs so she allowed some disobedience)
How were England’s Catholic nobility a threat to the Religious settlement?
- 1/3 of the nobility was still Catholic
- Earls of Westmorland and Northumberland had lost the influence they gained under Mary I(this eventually caised the revolt of the Northen Earls)
