3.1 Flashcards
natural selection (darwin)
The process that makes change possible in living
things
adaptive radiation
e the change from a common ancestor into a number of different species that “radiate out” to inhabit different niches.
Ecological succession
the term scientists use to refer to changes that take place over time in the types of organisms
that live in an area :primary
succession and secondary succession.
Ecological succession Primary successsion
occurs in an area where no soil exists, such as on
bare rock (volcano. Then slowly soil apears in different ways In time, soil slowly accumulates, a
process that may take hundreds of years in some locations
Pioneer species
the term scientists use to describe the lichens and
other plants that are the first organisms to survive and reproduce in an area. They change the abiotic and biotic organisms in many way
Ecological succession secondary succession
occurs when there is still some stuff left over (forest fire, house is demolished , much faster then primary successsion
Flooding
Flooding occurs in coastal areas, rivers, and lakes, when the volume of water exceeds the ability of the water body to contain it. Flooding can result in soil erosion and soil pollution if toxic chemicals are
present in floodwaters. Flooding can also cause widespread disease among humans when toxins or harmful bacteria from untreated sewage
Tsunamis
Huge wave massive destruction, puts alot of salt on the soil which causes no plant growth
Drought
Drought usually occurs when there is a below-average amount of precipitation in an area over a period of many months or years. Usally the eco system recovers from the drought when it rains
