30. Animal Behaviour 2 Flashcards
What is game theory
The alternative behaviour strategies in situations where the outcome depends n the strategies of all the individuals involved (relative performance)
An example of game theory?
Mating success in lizards the are influences by male polymorphism and the abundance of males in an area
Inclusive fitness means?
The evolution of behaviour - altruism Natural selection favouring behaviour that mximsis tan individual survival for reproduction
What is altruistic behaviour?
Inclusive fitness - total effect an individual has its genes by producing its own offspring and by providing aid that enables close relatives to produce offspring
Who made a quantitative measure for when natural selection would favour altruistic traits? What do three key rules stand for?
Hamilton - B - the benefit to the recipient C - the cost to the altruist R- the coefficient of relatedness (probably of relatives that share the same genes)
Define altruism
behaviour by an individual that increases the fitness of another individual while decreasing the fitness of the actor.
What is kin selection?
Natural selection that favours altruistic behaviour by enhancing reproductive success of relatives - therefore the individual
