18. Bony Fish Flashcards
what defines a bony fish?
they are fish that have bones
what are seven importnat traits of bony fish?
have an operculum (flap covering gill chamber)
swim bladder
bony skeleton
scales
they migrate
diverse reproductive system
complex fins - ray fins or lobe fins
what is the operculum and what is it important for?
its a flap covering the gill chamber. importnat for gas exchnage
look at image!!
what is the swim bladder and what is it importnat for?
a buoyancy compensator. very energy efficent as it allows fish to hover which saves energy
what are swim bladders related to?
they are related to the lungs of air breathing fish (lung fish). its likely the swim bladder evoled first hen lungs derived from it
what are bony fishes skeleton made of?
cartilige hardened with calcium phosphate
what are three important points of scales in bony fish?
they are flattened by the epidermis
covered by a layer of mucous to reduce drage in water and protection
very different to sharks
what is special about the reproductive system of bony fish?
they are hermaphrodites - both sexes during their life. start as one gender then change
name the two groups within bony fish
class acinoierygii (actin-op-de-rige-iii)
class sarcopterygii (sar-copt-tee-rige-iii)
what are three species within actinopterygii?
tuna, sunfish, sea horse
why are actinopterygii so diverse? give an example of a species
they are diverse because of ossified bones and swim bladder.
example is ray fins
what defines sarcopterygii? what is an example of a species
they have rod shpaed bones surrounded by a hick layer of muscle in the pectoral and pelvic fins. sub class species is acinistia
