26b Circulation System Extra Flashcards
What is ventilation?
The flow of air/water over the gas exchange tissues to bring oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide.
What is passive ventilation
No muscles required to breath in air
What is active ventilation
The flow of oxygen involves contraction of muscles
What is negative pressure breathing
The flow of oxygen to the lungs with low pressure due to the expansion of the chest cavity (lungs expand diminishing the pressure)
What is positive pressure breathing
The flow of oxygen to the lungs ring expelled by the deflation of air space by muscle contraction.
What do circulatory systems involve? What is the difference in blood in closed and open circulatory systems?
Vessels, heart(s) and fluid.
Closed systems it is only blood
Open systems the fluid is hemolymph because the blood gets mixed with internal fluids
What are the advantages (1) disadvantages (1) of an open circulatory system?
Advantage: Requires less energy to maintain
Disadvantage: flow cannot be controlled an the system pressure is low (slow)
What is an advantage (1) and disadvantage (1) is closed circulatory systems?
Advantage: pressure can be controlled to suit high metabolic rates
Disadvantage: energetically expensive
