3- Viruses Flashcards
Non-living characteristics of viruses
Non Cellular, depend on host cell, can’t reproduce outside a host, do not grow, and contain only DNA or RNA
Living characteristics of viruses
Have genetic materials, replicate, evolve, diversity, structures related to function
Why are viruses only specific to certain organisms?
Viral genome must match enough host DNA to overtake metabolic functions of the cell
Structure of a virus
A core nuclei acid surrounded by protein called a capsid
Lyric infection
Invade living cells and cause the cell to muse and burst
Lytic cycle
Absorption Penetration Replication Maturation Release
What’s a retrovirus?
Had RNA
What has to be done to RNA before lyric
RNA must be copied into DNA before lytic cycle begins RNA copies itself to look like DNA
Lysogenic cycle
Absorption
Penetration
Prophage
Reproduce
1st line of defense
Barriers ie hair, skin, secretions
2nd line of defense
Phagocytes, white blood cells engulf and destroy virus before they deactivate. Interferons are a special protein that interferes with viral replications + synthesis of protein
3rd line of defense
Antibodies are biological molecules produced in response to specifics antigens. Antibodies attach to antigen on the surface to imobilize
What is a long term form of immunity?
Antibodies
Vaccines
Give synthetic form of virus to trick body into producing antibodies that will be remembered and then used in the future when in contact with real virus
Benign vs malignant
Bengin does not spread
Malignant does spread
