3)Plant Nutrition and Transport Flashcards
What does photosynthesis do?
Produces glucose using sunlight
Where does photosynthesis happen?
In the leaves of plants, inside the chloroplasts
Where are chloroplasts?
In leaf cells and in other green parts of the plant
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water → glucose + oxygen
What is the symbol equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2
Why are leaves broad?
There’s a large surface area exposed to light
What are the three conditions that affect the rate of photosynthesis?
- Light
- Carbon Dioxide
- Temperature
How to test a leaf for starch?
1) Kill the leaf by dunking it in boiling water
2) Put the leaf in a boiling tube with some ethanol and heat it
3) Rinse the leaf in cold water and add a few drops of iodine solution and if iodine is present it will turn blue/black
Where are the elements found for the mineral ions?
In the soil
What are the three main mine mineral ions?
- Nitrates
- Phosphates
- Potassium
What happens if the plant doesn’t get enough of the mineral ions?
They suffer from deficiency symptoms depending on the mineral ions
What are nitrates?
They contain nitrogen for making amino acids and proteins. They are needed for cell growth
What happens if a plant doesn’t get enough nitrates?
It will be stunted and have yellow older leaves
What are phosphates?
Contain phosphorus for making DNA and cell membranes. They are needed for respiration and growth
What happens if a plant doesn’t get enough phosphates?
Plants without enough phosphate have poor root growth and purple older leaves
