3(a) Energetics Flashcards
1
Q
Exothermic Reactions
A
Chemical reactions in which heat energy is released to the surroundings
2
Q
Endothermic Reactions
A
Chemical reactions in which heat energy is taken in from the surroundings
3
Q
Calorimetry Experiments: Combustion
A
- Add cold water to copper can
- Measure initial temp. of water
- Weigh ethanol spirit burner with lif
- Light wick
- Heat till water reaches 40 degrees celsius
- Put lid on spirit burner to extinguish flame
- Stir water and measure final temp. of water
- Reweigh spirit burner with lif
- Work out mass of alcohol burnt
moles = mass/mr
4
Q
Calorimetry Experiments: Displacement
A
- Add copper sulfate solution to polystyrene cup
- Add zinc
- Stir solution
- Record max temp. reached
moles = vol x conc
5
Q
Calorimetry Experiments: Neutralisation
A
- Fill burette with acid
- Put alkali in polystyrene cup
- Add acid 5cm3 at a time until 50 cm3 has been added
H+ OH- -> H2O
