1(b) Elements, Compounds, Mixtures Flashcards
1
Q
Element
A
Contains 1 type of atom
2
Q
Compound
A
2 or elements chemically bonded together
Elements combined in fixed ratios
3
Q
Mixture
A
Various substances mixed together
Made up of elements and/or compounds
4
Q
Separation Techniques
A
- Filtration
- Crystallisation
- Simple Distillation
- Fractional Distillation
- Paper Chromatography
5
Q
Filtration
A
To separate a solid from a liquid
6
Q
Crystallisation
A
To separate solute from a solution
7
Q
Crystallisation Method
A
- Heat solution until reduced by half or saturated (test with glass rod - dip into solution and if crystals form quickly)
- Remove heat and allow crystals to form
- Remove crystals through filtration
8
Q
Simple Distillation
A
To separate components on a solution
9
Q
Fractional Distillation
A
To separate a mixture of liquids (miscible)
Separation using boiling points
10
Q
Paper Chromatography
A
To separate coloured inks/food colourings
11
Q
Paper Chromatography Method
A
- Draw a pencil line from the bottom of the chromatography paper
- Put samples of dye on pencil line
- Put into beaker containing solvent and the solvent shouldn’t touch the pencil line (so that samples don’t dissolve)
- Put lid on top to stop evaporation of solvent from paper.
- Mark solvent front when solvent reaches 1cm from the top
12
Q
Rf value
A
Retardation factor
13
Q
Rf value formula
A
Distance moved by spot/distance moved by solvent front
