2(c) Gases in the Atmosphere Flashcards
Gases in the atmosphere
- Nitrogen
- Oxygen
- Argon
- Carbon Dioxide
Percentage of Nitrogen
78%
Percentage of Oxygen
20%
Percentage of Carbon Dioxide
0.04%
Percentage of Argon
0.9%
Determining % oxygen in atmosphere using copper
2 gas syringes
Copper in the middle
Known volume of air is passed back and forth over the heated copper
As CuO forms, oxygen in air is used up
When reaction is complete, only 80% of the gas remains
Determining % oxygen in atmosphere using iron
Put iron wool at bottom of measuring cylinder and invert it in a trough of water
Increase in water level in trough
Determining % oxygen in atmosphere using rusting of iron
Put wet iron filings into conical flask which is connected to a gas syringe by a connecting tube
Difference in volume
Determining % oxygen in atmosphere using Phosphurus (non-metals)
Put evaporating basin with phosphurus on top of after and light on flame then cover with bell jar
Measure rise in water level when flame is out
Combustion of elements in oxygen: Magnesium
- White flame
- Produces MgO
Combustion of elements in oxygen: Sodium
- Yellow flame
- Produces Na2O
Combustion of elements in oxygen: Sulfur
- Blue flame
- Yellow powder - brown liquid
- Produces SO2
Combustion of elements in oxygen: Hydrogen
- Explodes to form water
Thermal Decomposition of Metal Carbonates: Copper Carbonate
Copper carbonate -> Carbon dioxide + Copper Oxide
Greenhouse Gases
- CO2
- Water
- Methane
