2(b) Group 7 (Halogens) Flashcards
1
Q
Colour of Fluorine
A
Yelloe
2
Q
Colour of Chlorine
A
Green
3
Q
Colour of bromine
A
Red/brown
4
Q
Iodine
A
Black solid
Purple Vapour
5
Q
Trend in Group 7
A
As you go down the group:
Reactivity decreases as electronic shielding increases so electrostatic attraction decreases between nucleus and outer shell electrons so electrons gained less easily
Melting/boiling points increase
6
Q
Halogens and halides
A
A more reactive halogen can replace a less reactive halogen from an aqueous solution of its salt
7
Q
Structure of Halogens
A
Diatomic
Have poisonous vapours
make halide ions in ionic compounds
8
Q
Group 8
A
Inert
Colourless
Exist as single atoms
Not flammable
9
Q
Group 8 trends
A
Melting/boiling point increase
