Illusionary layers/sheathes that cover Atman
Annamaya
Kosha 1 - physical/food body - earth
Pranamaya
Kosha 2 - stored in water throughout the body, breath/breathing (breath body), air
Manomaya
Kosha 3 - Emotional/mind body- fire
Vijnanamaya
Kosha 4 - Knowledge/intellect- studying spiritual texts - air
Anandamaya
Kosha 5 - Bliss, subtle body, chakra work, meditation, auras - ether
Vayu
5 “winds” that flow in 5 different directions in the body, keep body in balance
Pranavayu
Vayu 1 - Sensory intake, breathing - diaphragm to throat
Samana Vayu
Vayu 2 - towards center, absorption and digestion- seated in solar plexus, moves like a pendulum
Vyanavayu
Vayu 3 - circulation sends prana outward
Udana
Vayu 4 - up and out, coughing and sneezing
Apana
Vayu 5 - Down and out, waste removal, birth, menstrual flow
Chakra
Wheel/vortexes of energy, astral body/energy body, where Ida and Pingala cross in the body. Also considered doorways to perception or energy storehouses
Ama
Toxin created by poor digestion
Ojas
Healthy digestion, vitality
Kundalini
3 coiled snake (feminine) represents consciousness
Ida
Ida is associated with lunar energy. The word ida means “comfort” in Sanskrit. Idā has a moonlike nature and feminine energy with a cooling effect. It courses from the left testicle to the left nostril and corresponds to the Ganges river.
Pingala
Pingala has a sunlike nature and masculine energy. Its temperature is heating and courses from the right testicle to the right nostril.
