Silk Roads: spread Buddhism primarily, connected Africa, Asia and Europe (from Constantinople to Hanzghou)

Indian Ocean: primarily spread Buddhism, Islam and sometimes Hinduism, connected East Asia, Southeast Asia, India, and East Africa
- bulk and luxury goods
- rice
- cotton and pepper
- spices (like nutmeg)
Trans-Saharan Routes: primarily spread Islam, connected Mediterranean and North Africa with Sub-Saharan Africa (in particular West Africa)
