25.2 Electrophilic substitution Flashcards
what reaction does Benzene undertake?
electrophilic substitution
what temperature does Electrophilic substitution occur at and why?
no more than 50 degrees
otherwise it will lead to further substitution
why cant benzene undergo addition reactions?
Benzene has a delocalised pi system with p orbital electrons found above and below the plane
makes it very stable as there is a low electron density
therefore Benzene is unwilling to undergo an addition reaction
why can alkenes undergo addition reactions?
they have a localised pi system with a higher electron density
means electrons are more susceptible to electrophilic attack
what does benzene need to react with a halogen?
a halogen carrier catalyst
