2.5. Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
What is lumbar lordosis?
Exaggerated arch in back as spine realigns to maintain balance
Influence of PROGESTERONE
Relaxes all smooth muscle
Influence of RELAXIN
Relaxes and softens ligaments which hold the pelvic bones together
Influence of ELASTIN
Allows resumption of shape after contracting or stretching. Also softens ligaments in pelvis
What could a consequence of loosened pelvic joints be?
Pelvic Girdle Pain.
The looseness of ligaments disrupts the integrity of the pelvis. Can have an effect on labour- reduced movement due to pain etc.
Some women need crutches and physio referral
What are ROUND LIGAMENTS?
Attach the uterus to the pubic bone and helps maintain uterus central position in pelvis
What are BROAD LIGAMENTS?
Connect the uterus to the sacrum
Effect of progesterone in a woman’s legs
Progesterone relaxes smooth muscle. This relaxes the smooth muscle in the vein walls, causing incomplete valve closure which results in a back flow of blood. Resulting in varicose veins.
Where else may varicosities occur?
Vulva and anus (haemorrhoid)
What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Why does it occur?
Joint laxity and oedema of the peripheries puts pressure on the median nerve. This nerve provides sensation to the palm side of your thumb and fingers (except the little finger)
Symptoms: numbness, pain, throbbing, dull ache, hot fingers, decreased dexterity
Where are the Rectus abdominus muscles found?
Abdomen
What is diastasis rectus abdominus?
The growing fetus stretches the muscles, causing the linea alba (connective tissue) to become weaker and thinner. This results in a separation of the left and right sides of the muscle.
Physio referrals are often needed.
