2.5 Biological membranes Flashcards
What are the functions of membranes?
Control movement of substances in and out of cell/organelle
What is the Fluid Mosaic Model?
A model representing cell membrane function and structure
What is Diffusion?
The random passive movement of non-polar lipid soluble molecule from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
What is facilitated Diffusion?
Transport of polar molecules across a membrane via Channel Proteins
What is Osmosis?
the diffusion of water molecules from an area of high water potential
to an area of low water potential via a partially permeable membrane.
What is Active Transport?
Transport of all molecules across membrane from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration via carrier proteins using energy from ATP
What is Exocytosis and Endocytosis?
Exocytosis - substances exiting cell via vesicle
Endocytosis - substances entering cell via CSM made vesicle
What three factors increase rate of Gas Exchange?
Surface Area increase
Diffusion Distance decrease
Diffusion gradient becomes more steep
