2.2.3 Biological Molecules Lipids Flashcards
What is a lipid?
A biological molecule that is only soluble in organic solvents (e.g alcohol)
What are the two types of lipids?
Saturated
Unsaturated
What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated lipids?
Saturated - contain 0 carbon carbon double bonds
Found in animals
Unsaturated - contain 1 or more carbon carbon double bonds
Found in plants
Lower melting point
What are triglycerides?
Lipids made up of one molecule of glycerol and three fatty acids
How are fatty acids joined to glycerol molcules?
Ester bonds via condensation reactions
What is a phospholipid?
Triglyceride with two fatty acids and one phosphate group
What part of phospholipids are hydrophillic and hydrophobic?
Head - Hydrophilic
Tail - Hydrophobic
