2.5 Flashcards
How can equilibrium be achieved?
Waves attack cliff, wave cut notch
Material falls into bay
Rate of erosion of cliff reduces or ceases (temporarily)
Erosion is temporarily increased when material is broken down (abrasion with cliff)
Process repeats
Properties of marine erosion?
- Occurs mostly at headlands
- Help form wave cut notch/platforms
- Rate of erosion varies over time
What are the marine erosion processes?
Hydraulic action
Abrasion
Attrition
Corrosion
Properties of sub-aerial processes?
- Occur at backshore of bays
- Cliff degradation mainly from above
What are the sub aerial processes?
Mechanical weathering
Chemical weathering
Mass movement
What is a horizontal dip?
Vertical/near vertical profile
Notches are where softer strata are
What is a high angle seaward dip?
Sloping, low angle profile
One rock type facing sea
Vulnerable to rock slides down the dip slope
What is a low angle seaward dip?
Profile exceeds 90º
Overhang is present
Vulnerable to rock falls
What is a landward dip?
Steep profile, 70-80º
Stable cliff
Very few rock falls
What does a marine erosion dominated cliff look like?
Steep face
Is being undercut
Not a lot of debris at base of cliff
What does a sub-aerial process dominated cliff look like?
Curved slope profile
Lower angle face
Debris at bottom of cliff
