what is data collection
the way information in collected. e.g. paper forms, surveys, and stock taking
what is data storage
data must be stored in a secure and easily retrievable medium.
it is most conveniently stored in a database so information can be updated when necessary.
sensitive data should be encrypted
what is data retrieval
searches and queries can be performed on all tables to show specific values and retrieve the data requested.
using databases allows data to be accessed easily
what is manipulating and processing of data
after collection and storage data must be processed so it is ready for analysis. graphs and charts are made so that patterns and trends can be identified
analysis of data
to analyse data is to see what can be learned from it so important decisions can be made
securing information
is the process of encrypting and protecting data so that people who are unauthorised to see or understand the data cannot.
transmitting information
once the information has been processed it may need to be transmitted outside of the organisation. this needs to be in an easily accessible and understandable format
impact of information management on individuals and organisations
cost of equipment

what is an MIS and what does it do
management information system. it collects, stores, presents and analyses data for an organisation.
benefits of an MIS
integrated system: shares a large amount of data from multiple departments.
decision making: highlights areas that needs improvement
powerful analysis: accurate data analysis so that trends and patterns can be identified easily
limitations of MIS
cost and installation: expensive and needs to be professionally set up and maintained
requires accurate data: if not disastrous decisions could be made
training: employees will require training to use to software accurately
