2.4 Effective Teams Flashcards
Five Phases of Team Life Cycle Process
Forming
Storming
Norming
Performing
Adjourning
best practices of effective teams: Size
Small group, no more than 12 members
best practices of effective teams: Hierarchy
Hierarchy - two levels of IPTs; system level and subtier level for each major product / process
best practices of effective teams: Leader
Responsibilities include:
Leading the team
Negotiating staffing and participating in team member selection
Ensuring balanced participation within the IPT
Ensuring that decisions are made when required
Resolving disputes
Reinforcing Integrated Product and Process Development(IPPD) and IPT principles
Supporting and rewarding IPT members
Ensuring integration with other teams
Ensuring compliance with the team charter
Ensuring that team members are trained
best practices of effective teams: Dynamics
You should define the:
team goals for each specific IPT and common goals for all of the program’s IPTs.
reporting structure of and work relationship among all IPTs.
level of empowerment of all IPTs.
relationship between government and contractor personnel.

- Problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively in an IPPD environment
best practices of effective teams: Training
Training should be selected to fill knowledge gaps and in preparation for required tasks.
- Team-building
- Product-Specific Training
- Systems Engineering and Analysis Training
- Process training (e.g. Source Selection Training, Configuration Control training, etc.)
best practices of effective teams: Meetings
Roles and responsibilities needed for a team meeting include the team leader, recorder, and facilitator
preparing and distributing an agenda in advance
establishing ground rules by which all meetings will be conducted is a top priority for your first meeting

Business communications relate to solicitations, Requests for Proposals (RFP)/Requests for Quotations (RFQ), proposals, contracts, status reports, and other similar types of communications.
Product Development communications relate to the exchange of engineering models and data/information about the product and process being developed.
best practices of effective teams: Documentaion
Team Charter: documents important details to minimize misunderstandings and promote clear communication. It includes
