Points

  • Watch for dehydration (Cap rxn, slack skin, gums being colored)
  • Gynecomastia (breast enlargement, tenderness)
  • Basic side effects
    - Diarrhea, N/V, ab cramping, decreased libido, rash
  • Can be with or without food BUT STAY CONSISTENT!!
  • Avoid any other K products or foods that contain high potassium supplements

Metoprolol

Points:
- Watch for dizziness (especially when you first start as your body adjust to the medication

  • May cause diarrhea, headache or depression as well as fatigue
  • If diabetic monitor glucose closely due to that it can mask effects of hypoglycemia
  • don’t suddenly D/C the med
  • take with food or immediately following meals

  • Watch for electrolyte imbalance, watch for constipation, diarrhea, N/V
  • watch for Photosensitivity

- Will make dizzy when first starting medication so don’t plan on doing this especially if you’re just starting the medication

  • Can cause headache, rash, flu-like symptoms
  • watch for hypotension, bradyarrhythmia, syncope

  • Can cause constipation and worsen GERD

Nitroglycerin

Points:
- make sure your sitting when taking medication

  • Place under tongue and let it dissolve, may repeat two more times every 5 minutes for max of 3 doses
  • ER doses make sure you have 8-12 hours of nitrate free period
  • Storage information, keep in original bottle and keep on person, want to replace every 3-4 months to get new ones so that the potency is kept

  • can use with anti acids as well
  • doesnt have to be given with food if prophylaxis, but if taking for treatment use 30-60 minutes prior to food

Levothyroxine

Points:
-Take in the morning on empty stomach 30-60 minutes prior to anything else with only water so it is best absorbed. Separate out other meds that can bind to it by 4 hours (antiacids, iron, and ca)

  • get levels checked every 6 weeks.
  • make sure watch for signs of hyperthyroid: Tachy, sweating, unexplained weight loss, heat intolerance, palpitations, headache
  • it can take weeks in order to start to feeling changes

  • use once daily without regard to meals
  • proper injection technique, 2 inch around belly button, rotate site, Change needle and don’t reuse them, no need to pinch
  • If dose is missed, skip the missed dose and resume schedule. If more than 3 days is missed you will have to retiratin is needed

  • Watch for increases in dizziness especially when first starting the drug
  • can cause edema, N/V, fatigue symptoms
  • watch for anaphylaxis and angioedma
  • don’t suddenly D/C drug if on it for a while cuz it can increase risk of seizures
  • don’t take with alcohol or other CNS agents cuz it will cause more CNS depression
  • can be taken with or without food

- watch for prolonged bleeding

  • make sure to warn dentist of providers your on this medication
  • watch for rash, itching, diarrhea
  • don’t D/C this drug suddenly
  • AVOID OTC ASA and NSAIDS while taking medication and watch for using OTC omeprazole or esomeprazole
  • Taken with or without food

Points:
- remove contact prior to use and wait 15 minutes, allow at least 5 minutes between use of multi eye products

  • watch discoloring of the iris of the eye (can be reversed if D/C drug)
  • can cause some eye pain and stinging or itching of the eye
  • store in fridge until opening, once opened it can be stored at room them per up to 6 weeks

MOA: increased outflow of aqueous humor

Points:
- if using for long term watch for signs of osteoporosis including to report fractures (hip, wrist)

  • Side effects: abd pain, constipation/diarrhea, nausea, dizziness or headache
  • take the medication 30 minutes prior to meals
  • may open up the pill and place into apple sauce and drink with a glass of water
