A

third nerve palsy

22
Q

treatment of painful neuropathy

A

amytriptyline, duloxetine, pregabalin, opitates

23
Q

what is amytriptyline?

A

tricyclic antidepressant used in low doses for neuropathic pain.

24
Q

what is duloxetine?

A

serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. (anti depressant)

25
Q

what is pregabalin?

A

anticonvulsant. calcium channel blocker ( preventing glutamine release). also used for neuropathic pain.

26
Q

Name some opiates…how do they work?

A

Morphine, codeine, oxycodone.

Decrease perception of pain via opioid receptors

27
Q

picture

A

charcot neuropathy - warm swollen insensitive foot without ulceration or sepsis. progressive destruction of bone - rocker foot.

28
Q

examples of autonomic neuropathy

A

erectile dysfunction, postural hypotension, gastroparesis, bladder dysfunction, blunted counter response to hypoglycaemia.

29
Q

peripheral neuropathy symptoms:

A

numbness ( glove and stocking)
parasthesiae ( pins and needles)
pain
allodynia (pain from unpainful stimulus, e.g. walking on marbles)
