What is secondary constipation?
Rectum dysfunction secondary to things like spine injury, diabetes, hypercalcaemia/ hypokalaemia (action potential likelihood reduced), drugs.
What investigation would you do for someone with chronic constipation ?
Barium enema/ Colonoscopy
What is a fistula?
Abnormal tract between two epithelial lined surfaces.
What is a sinus?
Granulation or epithelized blind-ending tract.
What nerve controls the internal anal sphincter?
Superior rectal, off the pelvic plexus. sympathetic.
Which nerve control s the external anal sphincter?
Inferior from the pudendal.
What type of cells are in the upper anal canal?
Columnar cell (secretory) (endoderm)
What is the pectinate line?
Point where the rectum meets the anal canal ( they have different cells and blood flow and lymphatic drainage)
What is Obstructed Defection Syndrome?
Anismus,chronic straining causes stretching and redundancy of the distal rectum. Rectal redundancy.
