2.3 Reproduction Flashcards
What are all body cells, except gametes?
Diploid
What are gametes?
Haploid sex cells, having only one of each pair of chromosomes normally in a diploid cell.
What does diploid mean?
The normal number of chromosomes in a cell. In humans this is 23 pairs (46).
What does haploid mean?
Half the normal number of chromosomes in a cell. In humans this is 23.
Where are male gametes made?
Testes (animals) / anthers (plants)
What are male gametes called?
Sperm (animals) / pollen (plants)
Where are female gametes made?
Ovaries (animals) / ovaries (plants)
What are female gametes called?
Eggs (animals) / ovules (plants)
What is fertilisation?
The fusion of two haploid gametes to produce a diploid zygote, which divides to form an embryo.
