2.2 Control And Communication Flashcards
What is the nervous system comprised of?
The CNS and other nerves.
What does the central nervous system (CNS) consist of?
The brain and the spinal chord.
What does the brain contain?
The cerebrum, cerebellum and medulla.
Label the cerebrum, cerebellum and medulla on a diagram.
Check answer
What does the cerebrum control?
Conscious thought, intelligence, language
What does the cerebellum control?
Balance and co-ordination
What does the medulla control?
Unconscious control of body temp, heart and breathing rate, etc.
What are the 3 neuron types?
Sensory, inter and motor.
What do receptors do? (detect ….)
Detect stimuli / sensory information.
What do electrical impulses do?
Carry messages along neurons.
What do synapses do?
Transfer messages between neurons by chemical messengers.
What are reflex actions?
Involuntary protective movements.
What is the reflex arc pathway?
Receptor - sensory neuron - inter neuron - motor neuron - muscle
What do endocrine glands do?
Release hormones into the bloodstream.
What are hormones?
Chemical messengers which carry messages to target tissues.
What is unique about the cells of target tissues?
They have complementary receptors for a specific hormone.
What needs to happen to blood glucose levels?
They need to be controlled within safe limits (not too high and not too low).
When is insulin released?
The blood sugar rises above normal.
What does insulin cause?
Liver and muscle cells to remove glucose from the blood.
When is glucagon released?
The blood sugar falls lower than normal.
What does glucagon cause?
Lover and muscle cells to release glucose into the blood.
What is the pancreas?
The endocrine gland which produces insulin and glucagon.
