2.3 Hypertension Flashcards
Hypertension
- systolic BP > 140mmHg
- diastolic BP > 90mmHg
The force exerted against the walls of arteries by the blood as it is pumped from the heart
Blood pressure
Systolic BP
- highest pressure exerted
- ventricular contraction
- top number
Diastolic BP
- lowest pressure exerted
- Relaxed ventricles
- bottom number
The difference between the systolic & diastolic pressure
pulse pressure
opposing forces to blood flow as the arterial channels become more distant from the heart
peripheral vascular resistance
persistent elevated systemic blood pressure
Primary hypertension
elevated blood pressure resulting from an identifiable underlying process.
Secondary hypertension
Systolic pressure greater than 180mmHg and diastolic pressure higher than 120mmHg…
Hypertensive emergency
Clinical manifestations of primary hypertension
headache - back of head,
usually asymptomatic
