2.2 Biological Molecules (WATER) Flashcards
Why is water polar?
Due to uneven distribution of charge
(Oxygen is partially negative while Hydrogen is partially positive)
- Called Hydrogen bonding
What bonds are in water?
Hydrogen bonds
What gives water high SHC?
Hydrogen bonds
- This is because they can absorb a lot of energy, the higher the energy needed to raise the temp the higher the SHC.
What does water not experience rapid temperature changes?
It has a high SHC
What makes water cohesive?
Polarity
What is cohesion?
Attraction between molecules of the same type
What does cohesion mean for water?
This helps them flow, makes it great transporting substances. Helps water transport up plant stems.
What does polarity mean for water?
High cohesion and makes it a good solvent
What makes water a good solvent?
Polarity
What does being a good solvent mean for water?
Makes it useful in living organisms , blood can be transported in the blood
Ice is less dense than water which means?
Ice floats on top of water
This provides an insulating layer, increases the chance of survival of organisms in water
This is because it prevents them from freezing
Water is key in which reactions?
Condensation and Hydrolysis
