2.1.25 Coenzymes Flashcards

Q
What are the two types of cofactors?
A
Coenzymes and prothetic groups
1
Q
what is a cofactor?
A
Any substance that must be present to ensure enzyme-controlled reactions take place at appropriate times.
2
Q
Where do coenzymes bind to on the enzyme, for how long and when in the reaction?
A
Bind to the active site temporarily either before or during the substrate binds
3
Q
What happens in coenzyme reactions?
A
they are changed in the reaction (like the substrate) and recycled back to take part in the reaction again (unlike the substrate)
4
Q
What is the role of the coenzyme?
A
Carry chemical groups between enzymes so they link together enzyme controlled reactions that need to take place in the sequence
