2.1.15 Nucleotides Flashcards
What is the 5 carbon sugar in RNA?
Ribose
What is the 5 carbon sugar in DNA?
Deoxyride
What are the 3 subunits that join to form a single nucleotide?
A phosphate group, 5 carbon sugar and a organic nitrogenous base
What reaction joins the subunits together?
Condensation reaction
What joins together during the condensation reaction?
Phosphate group and the 5 carbon sugar
What are nucleic acids?
Chains of nucleotides bonded together
How many of the bases are purines? What are they?
two - Adenine (A) and Guanine (G)
How many of the bases are pyrimidines? What are they?
Three - Thymine (T), cytosine (C) and uracil (U)
What causes gout?
Too much nucleic acid.
Excess purines broken down in the liver produces uric acid.
Too much of this is bad, it is insoluble at room temperature so forms crystals deposited in joints are extremities.
