Q

What must water be heated to before it boils and why?

A

100’c because of the network of hydrogen bonds the allow the molecules more, continually breaking and making bonds

Q

What is the importance of water being a solvent?

A

metabolic processes in all organisms rely on chemicals being able to react together
eg 70%-95% of the cytoplasm is water and dissolved chemicals take part in processes like photosynthesis and respiration

Q

Why is important is the property of cohesion important?

A

The molecules stick to each other creating surface tension at the surface of water. It also makes long columns of water that are very strong and difficult to break
eg transport in the xylem, Pond Skaters can float on the waters surface

Q

Why is the property of freezing important?

A
it forms ice on the surface. The water beneath becomes insulated and less likely to freeze.
eg organisms (eg polar bears) can live on the ice
Lakes don't freeze completely so aquatic organisms are not killed as temperatures drop.

Q

why is the property of thermal stability important?

A

so large bodies of water has constant temperatures.
Eg stable environment of oceans
Evaporation can cool surfaces removing heat
eg land mammals use it as a cooling mechanism
