What is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs

A

The 5 levels of the pyramid (bottom to top):

  • Physiological needs
  • Safety + security needs
  • Social needs
  • Esteem needs
  • Self-actualisation

People start at the bottom and work their way up (wnt bottom thing first then want the next thing)

Advantages:
Can be applied to many industries

Disadvantages:
Assumes that the needs have to be met in this specific order

What is Herzberg’s theory

A

divided into 2 factors, hygiene and motivation factors.

Hygiene factors: will demotivate workers if not present, but will not motivate them when present, e.g.

  • status
  • security
  • work conditions
  • pay
  • fringe benefits

Motivation factors: factors which boost motivation, e.g.:

  • challenges
  • responsibility
  • promotion
  • training
  • recognition
