2.1 Lever Systems Flashcards
What are the four parts to a lever?
- Effort
- Fulcrum
- Load
- Lever arm
What is in the middle of a first class lever?
The fulcrum
What is in the middle of a second class lever?
The load
What is in the middle of a third class lever?
The effort
Name the 2 first class levers in the body?
The neck - tilting backwards
Elbow extension
Name the 1 second class lever in the body?
Plantar flexion
Name the third class levers in the body?
All movements apart from
- neck
- elbow extension
- plantar flexion
What are the advantages of a first class lever?
Large load can be lifted with a small amount of effort
What are disadvantages of a first class lever?
Limited flexibility
Slow movements - not good for generating power
What are the advantages of a second class lever?
Large load can be lifted with a small amount of effort
What are the disadvantages of a second class lever?
Limited flexibility
Slow movements - not good for generating power
What are the advantages of a third class lever?
Fast movement
Large range of movement
What are the disadvantages of a third class lever?
A large amount of effort is required
What is meant by the term ‘mechanical advantage’?
The effort required is less than the load
What is meant by the term ‘mechanical disadvantage’?
The effort required is greater than the load
