2.1 Cells Flashcards
Function of cell membrane?
Controls movement of substances
Function of cytoplasm?
Site of Chemical reactions (controlled by enzymes)
Function of mitochondria?
Site site of aerobic respiration (energy is released)
Function of Nucleus
Controls activities of the cells and contains genetic material
Function of ribosomes
Site of protein synthesis
Function of cell wall
Strengthens the cell or keeps it turgid. It is made up of cellulose (carbohydrate)
Function of chloroplasts
Absorbs light energy for photosynthesis. Some contain chlorophyll the green pigment
Function of vacuole?
Keeps the cell turgid (enlarged) and contains cell sap (sugary solution)
What does a bacteria cell have?
Cell membrane, cell wall, cytoplasm, ribosomes and sometimes flagellum (tail)
NO NUCLEUS
DNA in a plasmid
What does a fungi have?
Nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall, cytoplasm, mitochondria, ribosomes and vacuole
What does a yeast cell have?
Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane and a cell wall
Name 4 specialised cells
Beta cell - creates insulin
Red blood cell - carries oxygen to body tissue
Phloem cell - Transportation of sugar
Xylem cell - Transportation of water and minerals
How do dissolved substances move in and out of cells?
Via Diffusion
Describe diffusion?
- The movement of spreading particles
- From a high area of concentration to a low area of concentration
- No additional energy required
- The greater the difference in concentration the faster the rate of diffusion
What substances pass through cell membranes via diffusion?
Oxygen, carbon dioxide, glucose, amino acids, water and nutrients
