1.2 (P1) Nerves And Hormones Flashcards
What is a stimulus?
A change in the environment
What detects stimuli?
Receptors
What detects light
A light receptor
What is a neurone?
A cell that transmits nerve impulses
What is transmitted along a neurone
Electrical impulses
Go through the reflex arc
Stimulus Receptor Sensory Neurone Intermediate/Relay Neurone Motor Neurone Effector
What is the co-ordinator?
The central nervous system
What does the sensory neurone do?
Carries nerve impulses from the sense organs (receptor) to the central nervous system
What could be involved in the central nervous system?
The spinal cord
The brain
What does the motor neurone do?
Carries nerve impulses from the central nervous system to the effector
What is the gap between neurones called?
A synapse
How is information passed across the synapse
Chemical messengers or neurotransmitters are diffused across the gap
What is an effector
A gland or muscle that gives a response to the initial stimulus
What does the intermediate/ relay neurone do?
Carries nerve impulses around the central nervous system
