1.2 (P2) Control In The Body Flashcards
What three ways can water be lost from the body?
Sweat through your skin
Urine from your kidneys
Breathing from your lungs
What can too much water do?
Destroy or damage cells
What two ways can ions be lost from the body?
Sweat through your skin
Urine from your kidneys
Why does core temperature need to be maintained?
To maintain optimum temperature for enzymes to work best at
How does body maintain temperature?
Sweat
Capillaries constrict
Goosebumps
Skin flushes
Why is blood sugar controlled?
Gives a constant supply of energy
What do hormones do?
Coordinate processes within the body using chemical substances
Where are hormones secreted from?
Glands
How are hormones transported around the body?
They use the bloodstream
What hormones are involved in the menstrual cycle?
FSH
Oestrogen
LH
Progesterone
What is FSH and where is it secreted from?
Follicle Stimulated Hormone
The pituitary gland
What does FSH do?
It stimulates the maturity of growth of the egg in the follicle
It stimulates the release of of oestrogen
Where is oestrogen produced?
The ovaries
What des oestrogen do?
Prohibits the production of FSH
Stimulates the lining of the uterus to thicken
Stimulates the production of LH
What is LH? Where is it produced?
Luteinising Hormone
The Pituitary gland
What does LH do?
LH causes the follicle to burst releasing the eggs into the Fallopian tubes
This is the start of ovulation
It stimulates the release of progesterone
Where is progesterone produced?
From the yellow body which is the scab formed from the burst follicle
Or
Placenta
What does progesterone do?
It maintains the lining of the uterus
What two hormones are used in oral contraceptives?
Why these two?
Oestrogen and Progesterone
They inhibit FSH so stops the eggs maturing
What did the first oral contraceptives have?
Too much oestrogen
Why is progesterone only contraceptives preferable
Less side effects
Arguments for hormones as contraceptives?
It can be more effective therefore more reliable than a condom
It’s your body so you can control the hormones as you please
Arguments against hormones as contraceptives?
If God intended you to get pregnant you shouldn’t stop it
It could have serious long term effects if used regularly
What treatment can be given to couples struggling to get pregnant?
IVF
In Vitro Fertilisation
What hormones are given in IVF? Why?
FSH and LH
They burst and mature the eggs releasing more than one
How is IVF completed?
The eggs are collected from the mother and fertilised with the fathers sperm in a petri dish
The fertilised eggs develop into embryos
The two strongest embryos will be inserted into the mothers uterus
