What happend to amateurs?
began to lose status and power and professionals became higher status
What happened to society?
society became more egalitarian meaning there was more equality and achievement was built on merit not class
Why did professional sport for all classes grow?
- all classes being able to compete
- social mobility
- higher rewards for pros
through sponsorship - positive role model motivating others
- more spectators at pro matches
- pros having more time to train due to sport becoming a full time job
How were women still viewed?
- as weaker sex
- to appear ladylike
- little participation time
- expected to fulfil traditional role
- discouraged from vigorous exercise as thought to impact child bearing
What sports did women take part in?
- gymnastics
- dance
- tennis
How did law and order in society change?
- created further rules and regulations
- police attended events
- boundaries set on pitches
- sports made safer (e.g boxing gloves)
- team kits created
- scores + games created

decreased discrimination of women

- introduced teaching students skills, tactics and improving character building
- students were able to take on various roles of performer, coach, official
- students could perform in inter school fixtures and extracurricular sport
How did things change for the lower class?
- didn’t work as long
- more leisure time for sport
- more participation opportunities due to longer operating hours and facilities
- more paid holiday time added additional participation and competition time
How did income and wages change?
- gradual increase in disposable income
