204.01 Flashcards
What information should Dispatch obtain if possible for a hazmat incident?
• material name/type
• amount, and the size of container
• problem, (leak, spill, fire, etc.)
• dangerous properties of the material
• number of people exposed/injured
What important additional information should be included for unit units dispatched to the incident regarding navigation?
Safest approach/best access
If a person has particular knowledge of the hazmat, what should that person be instructed to do?
Directly meet and direct arriving units
Dispatch will inform units as to the wind speed/direction from what location?
The monitoring station nearest the incident
After the first arriving officer establishes command, the first arriving unit must consciously do what?
Avoid committing itself to a dangerous situation
When approaching what should units do at a hazmat incident?
Slow down/stop to assess any visible activity, taking place, evaluate effects of wind, topography, and location of the situation.
What level staging should command consider whenever possible for other responding units on a hazmat incident?
Level two staging
What is the objective of the size up on a hazmat incident?
To identify the nature/severity of the immediate problem and to gather sufficient information to formulate a valid action plan
What is the primary objective on a hazmat incident?
Identify the type of material involved in a situation, and the hazards presented before formulating a plan of action
What kind of information can be observed to formulate a plan and figure out what materials are involved on a hazmat scene?
Labels, markers, DOT, identification numbers, NFPA, diamond, shipping papers, etc.
What must an action plan for hazmat incident provide for?
- Safety of all fire personnel.
- Evacuation of endangered area
- Control of situation.
- Stabilization of hazmat.
- Disposal/removal of hazmat.
A strategic plan must include what?
• a method to control flow/release
• getting the hazmat back into a safe container/neutralize it/allow it to dissipate safely/coordinate proper disposal
What two zones are associated with controlling a hazmat area?
Limited access zone and evacuation zone
What is the limited access zone (LAZ)
The area in which personnel are potentially an immediate danger from hazmat
What must personnel have prior to entering the LAZ?
Proper PPE and an assigned activity
How should the LAZ be described to all responding units?
By geographic location
How should the LAZ be identified?
By yellow fire line tape
What is expected of a lobby control sector, controlling access to the LAZ?
• established safe perimeter around hazmat/identify with hazard zone tape
• request adequate assistance to maintain perimeter
• Identify entrance/exit points and inform command
• coordinate with haz sector to identify required level of PPE for personnel operating in hazard zone
• Collect/return accountability, passports of all companies entering/leaving controlled area
What is the evacuation zone (EZ)?
A larger area surrounding the LAZ in which a lesser degree of risk to personnel exists
The limits of the evacuation zone will be enforced by who based on distances/directions
Police Department
In all cases, the responsibility for safety of all potentially endangered citizens rests with who?
Command
Once hazard sector has been established, hazmat personnel will define and establish what zones?
Hot, warm, cold zones
