2021 Paper 3 (21/03/2025) Flashcards
Judging constant reliability?
If the two constants have a difference of less than 10% it means they are congruent but if it exceeds this the difference is too large and relationship doesn’t exist
Photons picked up by detector?
Since decay is random photons arrive randomly at the detector instead of arriving at a steady rate
Disadvantage of using high order maximums?
When a higher order is used the maxima are less defined, less intense, more spread out, harder to be accurate in obtaining θ, fainter, wider maximum making centre harder to detect, peak less pronounced
Using a mirror to eliminate parallax error?
Make sure the needle or reference point is completely obscured my mirror
Uncertainty in tabled results?
Percentage Uncertainty in mean = (1/2 range / mean) x 100
Transit Method?
The transit method measures how much light is blocked by a stellar object like a planet
Transit Method Disadvantage?
Disadvantage with transit method is if there is a very large difference is size like a small planet and a large star it will mean little light is blocked leading to poor data produced
Black Body Curve Properties?
Links peak wavelength to temperature and is a continuous spectrum emitted by the star. The dips in the graph are due to absorption of light of particular wavelengths absorbed by gases in outer layers which are then re-emitted in random directions leaving dark lines to appear.
Quasars location?
Quasars are formed on the edge of black holes.
Units of distance in Hubble Constant formula?
The units will be MPC otherwise megaparsec
Rayleigh Criterion?
The Rayleigh Criterion identifies the minimum subtended angle between two objects whose images can be resolved. The minimum angle occurs when the central maximum of one object coincides with the first minimum of the second object
Spherical Aberration?
This is where the shape of the mirror isn’t quite parabolic meaning parallel rays reflecting off different parts of the mirror don’t all converge on the same point
