Normal Conditions
Trade winds push warm surface water towards Asia, where it piles up in the Western Pacific.
El Niño
Trade winds weaken and the warm water gets blown eastward, towards South America
La Niña
Trade winds are stronger than normal, blowing warm ocean air towards westwards and restarting the upwelling of cold water.
Effects Of El Niño
Lower pressure in the Eastern Pacific, and South America will have more water and hence more rainfall.
