20 Descending And Gliding Flashcards
In a decent what are the angles involved?
Pitch angle + AOA = Flight path angle
What is Excess Drag?
D-T
Equation for angle of decent?
Sin(gamma) = (D-T)/w
Vmo
Velocity of maximum operating
-Gives steepest decent
Equation for drag in a Glide
D = w x Sin(gamma)
What factors will give the greatest Glide Range?
What is the speed for the best Glide Range?
- Decent angle to be as small as possible
- Want w x Sin(gamma) as small as possible
- Drag as small as possible
- Vmd gives the best Glide Range
- 4 degrees AOA, CL/CD Max
Equation for the Glide Range
Glide Range = height x L/D ratio
What speed gives:
- Best Glide endurance
- Best Glide range
- Glide endurance: Vmp
- Glide Range: Vmd
What is Vmp in relation to Vmd?
Vmp = 0.76 x Vmd
What effect does weight have of Gliding?
- Heavier weight will not effect the Glide Range
- Heavier weight will have an effect on the Glide Endurance
- More weight reduces Glide Endurance
What effect does the wind have on gliding?
- Head wind will reduce Glide range but will have no effect on Glide endurance.
- Tail wind will increase Glide range.
Effect of flaps and landing gear on Gliding:
Flaps and landing gear will produce more drag and so will reduce both Glide Range and Glide Endurance
