Classification of cleanliness in surgical wounds
A
- Clean wounds - all procedures where GI/billiary tract is intact. Contamination must be from staff or OR
- Clean-contaminated - secondary to opening of GI/billiary tract. Contamination from endogenous flora of patient
- Contaminated - occours during gross spillage of GI, contamination may be exo- or endogenous
- Dirty - surgical wounds with established infection PRIOR to the procedure

Typically endogenous
Seen in conditions that lowers tissue perfusion
Abscesses and foul smell

A
Cellulitis, myositis and myonecrosis
