Classification of cleanliness in surgical wounds

A
  1. Clean wounds - all procedures where GI/billiary tract is intact. Contamination must be from staff or OR
  2. Clean-contaminated - secondary to opening of GI/billiary tract. Contamination from endogenous flora of patient
  3. Contaminated - occours during gross spillage of GI, contamination may be exo- or endogenous
  4. Dirty - surgical wounds with established infection PRIOR to the procedure
