13. Benign liver tumors (symptoms, diagnosis, treatment) Flashcards
1
Q
Liver cystic lesions
A
Parasite or non-parasite
2
Q
Parasitic cyst
A
Ecchinococcus species
- Diagnosis: US, CT, MRI, ELISA, eosinophilia, anaphylaxis
- Therapy: Pericystectomy, ethanol/formaldehyde infusion and drainage
3
Q
Non-parasitic simple cyst treatment
A
surgery only if symptoms (laparoscopic cyst fenestration)
4
Q
Polycystic liver
A
Liver TX, US guided drainage (decompression -> less pain, better life, bridging)
5
Q
Non-cystic benign tumors
A
Focal Nodular Hyperplasia (FNH)
Liver hemangioma
Liver adenoma
6
Q
Focal Nodular Hyperplasia (FNH)
A
- Women, <1% malignant transformation, slow growth
- Diagnosis: central scar on CT, MRI, biopsy
- Treatment: laparoscopic resection if symptoms (>5cm) or uncertain diagnosis
- DD: hcc (may look similar on CT)
7
Q
Liver hemangioma
A
- Women, <5% rupture, grows slow (increased by pregnancy, contraceptives)
- Diagnosis: US, CT, MRI, blood pool scintigraphy
- NEVER biopsy!
- Operate if (laparoscopic): symptomatic, large, on liver surface, fast growth
8
Q
Liver adenoma
A
- Possible malignant transformation
- Fast growth
- Possible rupture and intrascapular bleeding
- Treatment: Liver resection
