2-Introduction To The Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
What dose the central nervous system ( CNS ) consist of ?
The brain (ENCEPHALON) and the spinal cord .
What is the CNS ?
a compact bundle of nerve cells and nerve fibers embedded in a special kind of connective tissue called NEUROGLIA (GLIA).
How many nerves extends from the CNS ?
12 pairs of CRANIAL nerves and 31 pairs of SPINAL nerves which together with their branches modulate somatosensory (touch, pain, heat), special sensory (vision, hearing, smell, taste)and motor functions.
How is the peripheral part of the autonomic nervous system ( ANS ) ?
the PNS is the entire complex of VISCERAL or SPLANCHNIC nerves connected to the CNS
What are the two spinal nerves ?
1- Dorsal roots - sensory fibers arising from cell bodies ni dorsal root ganglia.
2- Ventral roots - motor fibers arising from anterior gray column of spinal cord.
What is the dermatomes ?
It is a skin area innervated by a single spinal nerve.
What dose the ANS regulates ?
involuntary body functions such as heart rate, respiration, digestion, blood pressure, sexual arousal.
