2 Antibody Diversity Flashcards
The two variabilities of protein structure of antibodies are
- Biological Activity (FAB region)
2. Antigen Binding (Fc region)
This theory for generating antibody diversity states that cells respond to antigens by imprinting the shapes of the antigen and making antibodies accordingly. The problems are that antigens do not come in contact with DNA (flow of info is from DNA to protein)
Instructive Theory
This theory for antibody diversity states that antibodies are pre-made. Specificity is generated randomly. The problems are a single B cell produces only one specificity and and we do not have enough genes.
Selective Theory
DNA which is passed down through the gametes before it is modified by somatic recombination or maturation. Found in Pro-B cells (bone marrow stem cells)
Germ Line DNA
All antibodies are made in a similar way, only specific regions (known as ____) of the amino acid sequence are prone to variability.
CDR (Complementary-Determining Regions)
Mechanism 1 (by which Antibody diversity is generated) is related to ____ cells that contain _____.
Pro-B
Germ Line DNA
Mechanism 2 (by which antibody diversity is generated) is related to the production of ____ via a random selection of specific DNA segments.
Kappa (k) chain
Mechanism 3 (by which antibody diversity is generated) is related to the production of ____
Lambda (upside down y) chain
Mechanism 4 (by which antibody diversity is generated) is related to the production of _____.
