2:1 Respiration Flashcards
Respiration is…
the exchange of gas between an organism and its environment.
Respiration is the energy source for…
all oral communication.
Respiration is important for..
maintaining body systems (equilibrium) through an efficient oxygen exchange (inhalation and exhalation)
Inspiration is…
inhalation, the process of bringing air into the lungs for respiration / process of bringing oxygen to the cells
Expiration is
exhalation, process of eliminating air from the lungs for respiration / process of eliminating waste
Example of hypodermic needle and our diaphragm and lungs…
Diaphragm pulls down like the plunger and the fluid goes into the chamber (like air going into lungs). Plunger goes up (like diaphragm pushes up) lets the fluid gets expelled out (like air goes out).
Boyle’s Law:
given a gas of constant temperature, increasing (or decreasing) the volume of the chamber in which the gas is contained will cause a corresponding decrease (or increase) in pressure.
If you increase the volume…
pressure will decrease (negative pressure).
If you decrease the volume…
pressure will increase (positive pressure).
Our lungs demonstrate Boyle’s Law in order to…
create stability and equilibrium.
Our lungs in relation to Boyle’s law:
diaphragm pulls down, air enters lungs, creating….
negative pressure. Positive pressure is created when diaphragm pushes up, decreasing the volume as air leaves our lungs, creating positive pressure.
Framework of respiration that protects the lungs include (support structure for respiration):
- Vertebral Column
- Pelvic and Pectoral Girdles
- Rib Cage
