What is fibre?
Fibre is a name given to a group of natural plant materials that our body can’t digest.
Where is cellulose found?
Found in the stems, leaves and stalks.
Outside layers of seeds and beans
Where is pectin found?
Fruits such as plums, apples. It is the substance that makes jams set.
Why does the body need fibre?
Fibre is needed by the body to get rid of solid waste. Helps reduce the amount of cholesterol.
What happens if we don’t have enough fibre?
Constipation- this is when people find it difficult to go to the toilet.
How much fibre do we need?
We need some fibre in our meals everyday. Adults should have a minimum of 18g a day.
Which foods give us fibre?
Natural plant foods e.g. Dried fruits, whole meal food
The more natural a plant food is…
