1.1- Proteins Flashcards
Why does the body need proteins?
- makes the body grow.
- keeps the body working well
- energy
- repairs the body
What are proteins made up of?
They are made up of small units called amino acids. Different proteins have different numbers and formations of amino acids.
What are high biological value proteins?
HBV proteins are proteins that contain all the essential amino acids.
What are LBV proteins
Low biological value proteins are proteins that don’t contain all the essential amino acids therefore the can’t be eaten on their own.
Some examples of HBV foods?
- milk
- meat
- fish
- cheese
- eggs
- soya beans
Some examples of LVB proteins
Cereals, peas, beans, nuts and seeds
Example protein names?
Ovalbumin- egg whites
Gluten- wheat
Collagen- meat
Who needs more proteins?
Babies, children, teenagers, women that are pregnant or breastfeeding
What happens if a child doesn’t have enough proteins?
They stop growing, hair becomes thin, cannot digest food properly, catch infections easily
What happens if an adult doesn’t have enough protein?
Lose fat and muscle from their body, organs become weak, hair and skin becomes dry, oedema
What happens if we have extra proteins?
