What vitamins are water soluble?
These vitamins dissolve in water. This included the vitamin B group and Vitamin C.
Vitamin b1-Thiamin
Function- growth, energy, nerves
sources- cereals, seeds, nuts, beans
Deficiency- wet Beri beri, dry Beri Beri
B2-Riboflavin
Function- release energy
Sources- beans, nuts, seeds, dairy
Deficiency- dryness of skin around the mouth and nose, swollen tongue
Vitamin b3-niacin
Function- release energy from food
Sources- all types of meat
Deficiency-pellagra, dementia, dermatitis
Vitamin b5-Pantothenic acid
Function- release energy
Source- a wide range of foods
Deficiency - very rare
Vitamin b6-pyridoxine
Function- use protein, fat and carbs for different jobs
Sources- found in small amounts in a wide range of foods
Deficiency- headaches, weakness, anaemia
Vitamin b9-Folate
Function-help the body use protein
Sources- fruits, nuts, wholegrain cereal
Deficiency- problems in the digestive system, problems in the bone marrow
Vitamin b12-Cobalamin
Function- protective coating around nerve cells
Source- Liver, animals
Deficiency- pernicious anaemia
Function of Vitamin C
absorb iron, production of collagen, binds the body cells together, antioxidant
Sources of vitamin C
Fruits and vegetables, liver and fresh milk
Deficiency caused by lack of vitamin c
Scurvy, anaemia
