Two key parts of digestion:
Ingestion - process of taking food into the digestive system.
Digestion - the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food.
Functions of Digestive System: digest/absorb
Digestion – breakdown of food into particles, then into nutrient molecules small enough to be absorbed.
Absorption – passage of digested nutrients and fluid across the tube wall and into the blood or lymph.
Functions of Digestive System: elimination
Expulsion of undigested and unabsorbed residues from the end of the gut (water and dietary Fibre).
Prebiotic’s
Indigestible food ingredients that act as a food source for probiotics.
Probiotic’s
Health promoting organism, e.g. bacteria & yeats, reside inside the gut.
Constipation
Hard, dry, infrequent stools
Reduced by high fiber, fluid intake, exercise
Diarrhea
Loose, watery, frequent stools
Symptom of diseases/infections
Can cause dehydration
Diverticulosis
Pouches along colon
High fiber diet reduces formation
